Calling all princesses…

Just in time for Halloween, this is a craft fit for a princess or a queen or Tinkerbell or anything else that can justifiably or unjustifiably be made better by a crown.

I was the special crafting guest at a birthday party for my friend’s 5-year-old daughter this weekend and we made tiaras. They are REALLY REALLY easy and very cute. They are also very sturdy, made out of pipe cleaners and pony beads, so perfect for Halloween.

Here’s what you need:

- 90 pony beads

- 1 special sparkly bead, larger than the regular pony beads

- 5-6 pipe cleaners

1. Start out by putting 6 beads on a pipe cleaner. Leave room at the end to add the back of the tiara (so, you need a length of pipe cleaner that you’ll be able to twist with another pipe cleaner at the end). Then twist a second pipe cleaner at the beginning of the row of beads. Put 8 beads on this pipe cleaner. Wrap this pipe cleaner twice around at the end of the first row of beads. Repeat so you have 4 halfmoons in a row.

2. Attach a new pipe cleaner to the first halfmoon, right in the middle. Thread 12 beads on this pipe cleaner and then wrap twice around the next halfmoon, in the centre. Thread 5 beads on now, followed by the special sparkly bead, and then 5 more pony beads. Attach to the next half moon. Finish off by putting another 12 beads on the pipe cleaner and fasten in the middle of the last half-moon.

3. Twist one side of the crown on to the final pipe cleaner. Measure your princess’s head. Twist the remaining side of the tiara at the appropriate size.

*If you run out of pipe cleaner when you’re feeding the beads on, just attach another one really tightly. Pony beads have holes big enough for two pipe cleaners. Snip the excess with a pair of sharp scissors.

Good luck, and check back for other Halloween crafts this week!
