Photoshoot mania

I’ve been shooting for a few of our fall and holiday issues this week and I’m surrounded by piles and piles of sample clothing and makeup is everywhere. It’s not as glamorous as you might think, but it’s always a lot of fun.

Today, we shot some beautiful caramel-coloured satin pants so we did an antique bronze eye with black eyeliner and black mascara. It’s one of those no fail smokey eyes, says our makeup artist Sheri Stroh. (She was a Beauty 100 judge, so she definitely knows her stuff.) Her advice?  Start with a bronze eyeshadow all around the eye, smudging from lash line to crease and then underneath the lower lash line. You don’t have to be precise, she says.

And now for the kicker. Line the inner rim with black liner– I’m going to try this out this weekend. I always line the outside but the inner rim? Kind of scary but Sheri gave me some advice on how to pull it off.

Pull down the lower lid and apply liner on the inside of the eye, not just the outside, says Stroh. Go over it with a slant brush with eyeshadow as well. “It feels uncomfortable but it really defines the eye and makes any eyeshadow look smokey,” she says.

Because it’s kind of uncomfortable, unless you can stand the sensation, Stroh says just focus on the lower lash line. I’ve seen this look on many women and it makes the liner look unique and stunning.

Then pile on lots of mascara.

And now to finish your eyes. “Put a white shimmer in the corner. It makes eyes pop,” she says.

Sheri also has a new favourite look.

“A friend of mine did a makeup with a shimmery lilac cream eyeshadow, lots of mascara and a cherry red lip. And it looks gorgeous. I did it for a photoshoot because I was so inspired. That’s one of those combinations I never would have thought of but it looked beautiful.”

Always try something unexpected, says Stroh. I agree.

You never know when it might work out. You can always take it off if you don’t like it.

Thanks to Sheri for the pro tips.

Beauty 100 – Sunscreen

While Neutrogena won in our body category for sunscreen, readers also love their line for the face. I’m a huge advocate of sun protection so make sure you’re slathering it on year-round but especially now that we’re getting a bit more sunshine.

“My favorite beauty product is Neutrogena facial sunscreen. I love it because its really protects my skin from the sun but isn’t greasy and leaves my skin feeling nice and moisturized while protected!”

–Gillian,Vancouver

These are also great because they are oil-free (meaning they’re great for acne-prone skin) as well as waterproof, sweatproof, and contain vitamins A, C and E. Don’t head to the beach without it.

Beauty 100 – foot butter

Chatelaine was on Canada AM this morning showing off our favourite beauty products….If anyone caught the show we really are that passionate about beauty! (Check it out the CTV news video player link called Chatelaine’s 100 Best Beauty Buys for a recap.)

And now back to you guys. We had one reader who was super excited about her favourite beauty product. And I for one am really hard on my feet so this one makes me pretty excited! I have yet to try it but will definitely pick some up now that it has such a stellar recommendation.

Foot Butter from the Rocky Mountain Soap Company.

“It’s a butter in a deodorant stick-type-container that you rub on your feet to refresh and hydrate dry, cracked heels. It keeps my feet soft and pretty, which is increasingly important as we approach sandal season.  It has a fresh scent and is easy to use.”

–Gwen ‘born to be a cover girl’, Toronto (Yeah she really said that, haha.)

Thanks for the advice. Look forward to more!

Beauty 100 – scrubs, mascaras

People are loyal to their favourites. Here are some more of the greatest picks!

Kiehl’s pineapple papaya facial scrub

“I tried many, many products before finding this one.  It’s a little more pricey but it really works so I don’t mind spending the extra money on a product that feels great on my skin and leaves it soft and smooth. “

-Charlene, Toronto

Fresh Sugar Lemon bath & shower gel and the matching body lotion

“I happened to get hooked on these products after sampling them at a Whistler resort and am now slightly addicted to this line.  The shower gel really wakes you up in the morning with the crisp lemon scent and the body lotion feels like you are lathering your body in lemony buttery goodness. I LOVE these products.”
 -Charlene, Toronto

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

This one was a favourite of many of you!

“I have tried many of the samples you receive with free gift packs but I always go back to my tried and true green and pink Maybelline Great Lash.  Great price, great product, great looking lashes. Enough said.” – Charlene, Toronto

“My favorite beauty product is Maybelline Great Lash Mascara…It is the best mascara, and the only mascara I buy now.  I flop back and forth between other beauty products, but not with my mascara.  Why do I love this product….because it doesn’t turn me into something I am not, it is natural, and classy yet not overwhelming.”

-Robyn, Bayfield, Ontario

Thanks for all of your input… There are more to come!

Beauty 100 – body moisturizer

I get my best and most trusted beauty tips and tricks from friends. It was one friend in university who first told me that brown liner would work better on my fair complexion than basic black. Voila, I stopped looking “nighttime” during the day and achieved a more natural look. It’s also the products recommended by friends that we stick with as well. (The same friend recommended a brand that I stuck with for years.)

So here’s another tried and tested product just from all of you!

Kiehls Crème De Corps Body Lotion, $38.

“My favourite beauty product is Kiehls Crème De Corps Body Lotion. It makes me feel like a millionaire every time I put it on, and is a great interim between a warm bubble bath and a cozy robe on a cold winter night.”

-Beth, Toronto

To find Kiehl’s products try the Kiehl’s store at 407 Queen Street West, 2518 Yonge Street and by mail order at 416.483.1335, in Vancouver at the Kiehl’s store at 1025 Robson Street and by mail order at 604.408.4182, in Montreal at 760 Ste. Catherine West and by mail order 514.788.4226, and select Holt Renfrew stores across Canada.

Thanks for all the great suggestions and stay tuned for more!
