Autumn, our husky mix, was never happy with her crate. She had not been in one until we got her and everyone said she should be crate trained. Well, in her crate she was as we drove the 1 1/2 hr drive up north.
As my husband drove, he suddenly announced that it was snowing. While looking out the windows of the van we could not see snow. He then said no outside…..in the van! Autumn was so upset being in her crate that she was shredding her crate pillow into very tiny pieces and they were floating through the van.
Christmas in July inside a van courtesy of our dear pup!! Now the crate has been stored for a few years and she loves her seat belt!!

My little ones are feline, and they do not enjoy traveling at all. When they get packed up for trips to the vet, I get entertained by a chorus of meows and howls the entire distance.
Last year, one of the cats needed to be observed over the weekend, so he made the trek up to the trailer with us and stayed the weekend. He was a bit out of sorts, and not too happy you have to be on a leash for his walks around the area.
It seems we will have to limit our ventures out and about based on our experiences so far!

Our dog Benny loves being with us at all times so he gets upset as soon as he sees us bringing suitcases out. He knows that means we’re possibly leaving without him. Well, one year we decided to take him with us to Tofino. Our hotel was right on the beach and he had the best time ever! Lots of long walks on the beach, running on the sand, playing with other dogs – life was good. As we put our suitcases on the bed on the day we were leaving, he just looked at them and ran to the door that led to the beach and looked at us as if to say “No, let’s not go home yet, let’s go back to the beach”. He repeated this action several times. It was so cute, yet also sad because we knew that he was just having so much fun that he didn’t want to leave.

Our precious poodle, Mikey, loved to travel with us in our RV. Although he was blind, he knew when the RV was parked in front of the house, and knew that we were getting ready to go away. He sat there amongst all the boxes and bags that were going onboard, with a sad look on his face, worried that we were going to leave without him. We finally got that we would put his bed by the door first, just so that he knew he was going with us. Mikey made many trips through the eastern and western States, and Canada, and he wintered for three years in Texas before passing away at the age of 14. We missed having a dog so much we recently adopted Bella, a maltepoo. She is a great little traveller too, and is looking forward to her first winter down south this year.

Our schnauzer, Bowser, loves riding in the car & enjoys his crate too. Good thing, since we took him for a 16-hour long drive to Cape Hatteras for vacation! At every stop we made, he just relished getting outside to sniff & explore this new place. And once we reached our destination, he was just as happy! As long as we were all together, there was nothing better.

My Mini schnauzer (Kara) and I were going to Vancouver for a dog show, flying a major airling (AC).I am very careful when I fly my dogs so I do not sit down until I am told my dog is on the flight. This time I was looking out the window and saw my crate (easily recognized by the bright duck tape around it in case of the screws coming loose) going towards another aircraft. I jumped up and down and finally got the flight crew to pay attention. Not only was my dog going to the wrong aircraft but also, so was everyone’s luggage. Needless to say the entire cabin full of fellow travellors set up a cheer as they watched the luggage waggon turn around and come over to our plane and put Kara and all the rest of the luggage onto our plane Lahni thompson

My Jack Russell Terrier, Jesse, has always been a good car traveller. She usually sits in the back seat when we make a daily commute to see my horse, but on longer trips she often sleeps in the front passenger seat. This past summer she travelled to Ottawa, and made a few shorter trips to Peterborough, as well as a cottage visit to Muskoka in which she travelled in great luxury in the back of a BMW. Always a great passenger, I don’t like to leave home without her. We hope to make a longer trip this fall to the east coast.

I have 2 cats named Ripley and Binks and they do not travel well. As one person said, the chorus of meows is deafening. One will hide under the driver’s seat and they other climbs over every aspect of my Jeep. Both cats are like the one on the Tempation commercial. I swear they will come through the walls for food.

I have travelled with 4 dogs and it was insane! Everyone wants to be as near to mom as possible. Everyone wants to lay down in the excact same spot & they all want to look out the window at the same time. It’s maddness getting everyone’s lease on at pit stops. But I wouldn’t have change a thing. Now I just have one smaller dog, and he would love a private chalet all to himself no matter where we are.

Layla, my one and a half year old Aussie/Min Pin X, has always been content when traveling in the car, enjoying watching the passing scenery. My favorite traveling story was the first time we went to visit my boyfriend at his house, an hour from our home. As soon as we got off the highway and started driving through the neighbourhood towards his house, it’s like Layla knew where we were going! She started wagging her tail and panting, even letting out the occasional excited whine. She had her paws up on the window ledge, anticipating our arrival at his house as if she knew exactly where she was going! The closer we got, the more excited she got! As soon as we pulled in the driveway she ran right up to the front door and was so excited when my boyfriend opened the door to greet her. Layla still does this every time we go to his house, but I think it’s crazy how she seemed to know what was going on the very first time. Layla would LOVE this pet chateau, and because it folds flat, it would be great to take on our car rides to my boyfriend’s house, so she has somewhere comfy to sleep in while we are there!

Mycky, my Shit-zu/Bichon cross loves going for drives in the car. Likes to look out the window at anything passing. One time on our way back from Calgary to Edmonton, we had to stop in Red Deer to gas up. I got out of the car, filled up the gas tank and paid for my gas purchase. When I went to get back in my car, lo and behold Mycky had jumped up and inadvertently locked the car doors. Well, the key was locked in the car and I had no way of getting the doors opened. I had to call AMA to unlock the vehicle. $65.00 and an hour later we were back on the road. Now I make sure I take my keys with me every time I get out of the car. I just know that Mycky would be extremely happy to to own a pet chateau!

We adopted a stray kitty we called ‘Moocher”. (She had been mooching off all of our neighbours). Although she had appeared to be a wild outdoor kitty we offered her the opportunity to ‘travel’ to our new home.
The only thing we could thing to use to transport a cat was an old metal and vinyl clothing hamper.
With the truck ready and movers standing by, we loaded her into the hamper and began to carry her out. In seconds she somehow shot herself upwards, blew the lid open and tore back into the house.
Now we had to find her, put her back and tape the lid shut. She literally kept launching herself upwards attempting to get out again. She howled and growled and launched her paws out every hole available to her!
When we arrived at the new house we had to put the hamper in one bedroom and ever so slowly release the tape and run! Of course she survived her travel ordeal and became our beloved family cat.
She would love a home to travel in style and comfort that would allow her to see us while we drive.

Our menagerie travelled with us on weekends, holidays, etc. Two scotties, one westie, a persian cat and two siamese cats. Each had their own kennel for travelling or sleeping. Each had their own harness and all were a delight. They were our little family and such a joy. The scotties protected the wee Westie at all times, with the persian following us when walking with them. While the Siamese thought they were the queens and were distainful of the others – they all literally enjoyed their own space as a family. That was then for sadly they have passed on. Today I have a wee Shitzue and a SPCA persian cat who finally have become friends. It would be nice for my Queenie, persian, to have her own little home.

We would travel alot with our Peanut, a ShihTzu.
We were on our way to Florida from Detroit, Michigan. We had stopped at a restaurant in the airport, since we had some time before our flight. Peanut was in a travel bag that was decorated and it had black mesh around the top, which wasn’t very noticeably. It looked like any normally travel bag. I had put in on the floor by my chair while we were eating. After we finished our meal we were still sitting and a women came up to us, very disturbed and said do you know that your bag is moving. My husband and I looked at her concerned face and started laughing and explained to her that our dog was in the bag. The poor woman was so embarrassed, but started laughing too. It was one of our most memorable vacations with our dog.

Schnooky, my beloved orange bull’s eye tabby, adopted me in the parking lot of a gardening centre 9 years ago. Since then, he has travelled round trip from Burlington to Belleville (ON)or Burlington to Leamington (ON) and, Burlington to Saint John (NB) by car over 30 times.
Please don’t get the idea that he actually enjoys it however; an ear-shattering howl of protest is an absolute guarantee sometime during the first half-hour of travel.
From then on, he’s trained me to understand that he must have a stack of garment bags in the back seat to lie on, so he can view the world around him in comfort. The only thing missing is “the royal wave” of the paw as we pass by wide-eyed other motorists!
Since he loves getting into and onto everything new and different, this pet chateau would definitely fulfill his lofty expectations of in-transit and vacation site accomodation!

Our dog 7 year old Golden Retriever Rufus always goes with us if we’re going to be gone the day or more. On a spring icy day I was travelling to the city for the day. Somehow I lost control and rolled my vehicle onto its side. I was just starting to figure out how to get out of the car when an RCMP officer was at the window asking if I was OK and if anyone was in the car. I said my dog was in the car and I am 8 mos. pregnant. He said,”he’s fine – he’s in our truck. He’s what made us stop and look for your vehicle.” I was removed from the vehicle by EMS, taken to hospital for observation and sent home. Rufus spent the day at the cop shop until my husband could pick him up and he was treated like royalty. Needless to say, he is my hero too! And I had a beautiful healthy baby girl 2 months later.

My little dog is happy in the car as long as his head is on my lap. I made him a pillow to fill the space between the seats and that is where he loves to lay.

We love hiking in the mountains and our 3 dogs love the car rides leading up to their upcoming adventure. All humane society specials, our dogs vary in age. Our Bebe (baby in French) was 15-17 years old, Ryley, approx 8 years and Emma, 4 years. With Bebe being so old, it’s always a debate whether or not to bring her but she just loves her car rides and walks! One day in the midst of our hike, Bebe was slowing down the group but you can just tell she was so enjoying the different smells on her hike. Out of the blue, my husband (then boyfriend) piped up and said….”You know, Louise. I know you don’t like breaking up the “family”, but you don’t normally see the grandmother in a wheelchair on a hike”. Too funny. Point taken.

I was moving from Labrador to Ontario and did not think Timon, my gray tabby would do well on the ferry, so I opted to send him to his “grandparents” in Nova Scotia by air where I would pick him up for the rest of the drive. I got a sedative from the vet and was instructed on how to administer the pill. If you have ever pilled a cat, you know this is not an easy process. After repeated attempts consisting of me rubbing his throat and blowing gently on his nose, and him faking swallowing the pill then spitting it out in the dining room corner, behind the TV and under the couch, we both were exhausted and I was in tears. He made the trip without issue and I never tried to tranquilize him again.

Made a big adult decision to fly my new puppy home to prove to my parents that I could be a responsible pet owner after many ‘notes’ from them about why I should not even try. I boarded AC with my 8 week old puppy in her new crate. The flight attendant made her comfortable and could be seen often kissing her little nose. Half way into the flight, “Taylor” decided she needed room to do her business. As I quickly ushered her to the back of the plane, she stuck her butt up to the crate gates and let her rip. It was like the substance had hit a fan! Not pleasant and not well received. The flight attendant, bless her soul, strapped on gloves and attempted to comfort my little baby. By the time we exited the plane, the entire flight crew and my parents were well aware as I was covered in fecal matter, that I was going to become parent of the year!

I have one cat that is well travelled. Planes, trains, automobiles, he’s done it all! Then we got Echo. She is afraid of everything! We haven’t even tried travelling with her since we think it will traumatize her too much. To the vets and back is as far as she goes….I miss bringing them on vacation though…now we have to find a sitter!

Our little dog loves the car and sleeps on my lap. She only wakes up when we turn the last corner to our house. I don’t know how she knows when to wake up but she always does.

I take my Shih Tzu Odie with me every where.. he’s my best friend. This summer he and I embarked on a month long road trip across America. He traveled in the back of the truck the whole way, like a trooper.. we camped, we moteled, we Grand Canyoned… he loved it! In Vegas we broke down so I rented a car, right when I was parking it to return the rental he started to puke. Before I could get him out, he puked all over the front seats and me… the one and only time he puked on the whole trip and it was all over the rental car and me!

We wanted to make sure our new pet Yorkchi likes going in the car with us. We bring his often on short rides. This guy loves the car and demands that he stick his head out the window for air with his furry little whiskers blowing in the wind. We do this safely with leash in hand so he does not fall out. On our trip to Kingston, we brought his bed, bowl, water, water, food, snacks, poopy bags along for the ride. It was like bringing a baby with you. I did not realize all the work that goes into bringing your pup with you., even for just a few hours. I felt like a new mother all over again. He slept in his bed and looked out the windows as if to say “are we there yet”. He was just as excited to get out of the car as he was to get in. He was a very happy puppy.

When my husky-mix, Willow, was about a year old, I took her with me on an overnight trip to Plattsburgh, New York, an hour from Montreal. Poor Willow became violently ill that night– panting, pacing, vomiting– and neither one of us slept a wink. Just as I’d contacted the local vet hospital the next morning, I understood why: We were in the midst of a major earthquake! Sure enough, five minutes after it passed, Willow was back to her old self!

Our bulldog, Stella, travels with us on every road trip we go on. A few years ago, we drove to PEI from our home in Montreal. A huge fan of Anne of Green Gables since childhood, I HAD to go to the museum featuring the big white house that inspired the story. When we arrived, I took a chance and asked the gate attendant if we could bring in our dog. They answere “sure, she just can’t actually go into the house itself”. So, I was thrilled to be able to stroll the Balsam Hollow trail with my girl, take pics in the gorgeous garden and take her for a walk in the Haunted Woods. The staff, dressed in their period costumes, all came out and gave her a pat. It was a perfect day.
