I first read about Luna Fest on one of my favourite websites, Treehugger.com. It’s a festival of short films made by women, about women, for women, with the premier event happening in San Francisco later this week in benefit of The Breast Cancer Fund. But here’s what I found really intriguing:
“Here’s the best part about Luna Fest: It doesn’t stop with the kick-off event in San Francisco. Women everywhere have the opportunity to sign up to host a Luna Fest film festival. They are given all of the necessary elements – the templates, the films, and all other essential materials. At each event 100% of the proceeds go to charity; with 15% going to The Breast Cancer Fund while the remaining 85% is given to a nonprofit organization of choice from the local community. This means that if you host it, you get to choose which nonprofit reaps the monetary reward.”
I surfed over to the festival website and discovered that not only are there a couple Canadian filmmakers involved — Renuka Jeyapalan of Toronto is the director of Big Girl, and Jennifer Halley of Vancouver directed Sarah in the Dark — but there’s also one Canadian date: October 4, in Toronto.
Watch the trailer for Luna Fest and read about the films here. Sign up to host your own event here — if you do and you’re in Canada, let me know and I’ll post about it! And I’m putting the Toronto date in my calendar… Hope to see you there!
