Ruby Dhalla

Who is to be believed in the Ruby Dhalla case of alleged caregiver abuse?

The more the days pass, the less clarity is brought to this story, which is thus far only being played out in a fuzzy she-said/she-said arena that’s light on proven fact-based persuasion.

Dhalla’s lawyer pointed weeks ago to a conspiracy, a political frameup. But who on Earth would be so motivated to take Dhalla, the former Liberal critic for youth and multiculturalism — hardly a power-broker in the political sphere — down?

Now comes news that the gentleman who first employed nanny Magdalene Gordo and brought her to Canada in 2007 will speak at a media conference to say that he was victimized by the nanny’s supposedly bogus claims.

Can anyone tell me: How properly is this mess being investigated?

  2. I don’t think it is being investigated properly at all and I doubt it ever will be. The nannies do not want to file any formal complaint and the allegations are all verbal while the documentation appears to be fine and legal, so it seems there are no grounds for a legal investigation. The nannies’ lawyer says they want to move on and not talk about this anymore.

There are some actions in the background between the government and the group behind the nannies, the Caregivers Resource Centre Canada. The CRCC would like improvements to the caregiver program and residence status for the nannies, and the government may grant that, but it is unlikely the government will proceed with any legitimate investigation of the allegations. They seem to have chosen the media “trial” format.

  3. I have definite opinions on the Ruby Dhalla media story. I also admit that my opinions are probably ill informed, knee kerk reactions to a situation that I know nothing about.

I say, let the truth be told through the courts, if it goes that far.

If it doesn’t, then Ruby is Innocent of all charges, until proven guilty in a court of law.

  4. In the meantime she is doing mote harm to the country by proposing Bill C428. This Bill is to provide for all immigrant seniors Old Age Security (OAS) payments after three years in the country rather than the current ten.
Old Age security should not be paid to any immigrant senior as the only way they can immigrate to Canada is through the Family Class protocol which provides for family “sponsorship”!
Her proposed Bill will go nowhere but will provide some smoke and mirrors and photo ops that Dhalla is famous for to ramp up support in the East Indian community in her riding.

  5. I agree with Robert. No senior immigrant should be paid any old age security if they have not worked a day in Canada. Why should our precious tax dollars be going to them if they have not contributed anything to this country?? Let the families that sponsored them be responsible for their costs. Otherwise don’t sponsor them, period. I know I sound harsh but there are better things our tax dollars could be going to, like funding education, health and infrastructure of our country. I am sick and tired of our money being wasted. I am also an east indian and I am fed up and sick of hearing people in my community talk about how they cheat CRA on their taxes, cheat immigration laws, etc. to get more money. Makes me sick. Ruby Dhalla is only pushing this bill to make her east indian community happy so she can go further up the political ladder. Ruby WILL NOT BE VOTED IN AGAIN. NOR ANYONE WITH SAME IDEAS AS HER. We need to think about our country as a whole and what benefits the overall population sometimes, at least. Geez.

  6. Ruby Dhalla is proposing that the elderly from India who come here for only 3 years get OAS benefits. That’s a huge tax increase and it’s one sided. Canada Pension Plan is for Canadians. They should live in the country for 10 years and contribute just like everyone else.

It’s a racist bill because it excludes people from other countries. India is a successful country, let it take care of it’s own elderly. India has lots of poverty. Maybe Ruby doesn’t want to be Canadian and she should go back to India and help out their poor women. When she talks about “woman’s rights” she’s off by a couple of decades. She talks like women are still fighting for their rights. I am pleased to tell you that 50% of the fortune 500 managers are all women…HP’s CEO Carly, the founder of the body shop and the CEO of Mattel Corp, are or were all ladies in suits.

Maybe Ruby is diverting attention from the fact that she’s a slave driver and pays her poor workers from the Philippines next to nothing while she pockets the difference…at the expense of Canadian Taxpayers.

The Canada Pension Plan is for Canadian workers that plan to live in this country and not for elderly Indian ladies that have never contributed towards the economic success of Canada and will go home after 3 years and collect OAS benefits from Ottawa(yes they mail OAS benefits anywhere in the world).

Canada needs young entrepreneurs with ideas and the guts to transform them into businesses.

Canada doesn’t need elderly seniors that are going to milk our Pension systems for the soul sake of gaining votes from the India community(700,000 strong). The “India” community is not an “India” community it is a “Canadian” community that would be mad as hell if they realized that Ruby would be increasing their taxes in order to pay for overseas senior citizens.

It’s a tax increase, it’s wrong and it sucks for people that are already under a crushing recession to put food on the table for their families. Please reject this bill of idiocy!!!

  7. To: Fed Up;

I am not from India, my family was European, however I went to my friend’s Indian wedding and danced in a circle and ate very spicy foods. I have great respect for the country of India.

However, I think that the way to unify Canada is to take on issues of politics together as one people(from over 200 cultures) and that way the bills passed in the legislature will be fair and just for everyone.

We should also report all abuses of the tax system to the proper authorities. We should learn to take action because by not doing it, it’s going to financially cripple this great country.

  8. The Ontario brief

Section 115(4) if the Canada Pension Plan Act provides that changes in the CPP cannot be made except with the consent of at least two thirds of the population. This places Ontario, which has one half of the population outside Quebec in the special position of being able to block anything it does not like. It also places a special responsibility on Ontario to be well informed as to both the broader and the more technical aspects of CPP matters, and to act in an enlightened manner.

  9. My husband is from the USA and he has to wait 10 years to get a pension…I am not sure why Ruby would want preferential treatment for any immigrants from India….I only see it as fair that a wait period of 10 years is applied ACROSS THE BOARD. In other words, if there are any persons who are actually getting a pension after 3 yrs from immigration – EXTEND it for ALL IMMIGRANTS. I didn’t pay into the CPP for 40 years to have someone come in and collect that has a pension elsewhere. And that includes my husband. NO EXCEPTIONS.

  10. Bill C428 sounds all nice and compassionate…except that it’s really an actuarial time-bomb, with three years on the clock. There is NO was that Canada’s pension systems can remain solvent with such a massive increase in claimants.

For years, the pundits have told us that we ‘need’ mass immigration, to shore up our pension system. Now, it appears that THAT façade’s finally fallen off.

The only sectors of the economy that REALLY need our absurdly-high intake of over a QUARTER MILLION immigrants per year are the real estate, construction and banking sectors. In order to justify home (and associated infrastructure, like roads and schools) construction, constant population growth is required. Bulk imports of warm bodies from abroad fill this need. The result is urban sprawl and all its attendant problems: loss of farmland (and higher food prices), loss of wilderness areas and stress on freshwater supplies.

The Liberals and NDP–ever eager to pander to South Asian and Chinese vote blocks–WILL try to ram this through using every means at their disposal, including a Charter challenge to the Supreme Court. Contact your MP, twitter this, email people; the media are NOT reporting this, so YOU have to take on their role.

  11. When Ruby’s and her immigrant families have been in Canada for at least 50 years perhaps 10 years (not 3) might seem about fair because my family on 2 sides have been in Canada since 1750 and helped form this country. My present family has worked and paid taxes here for many generations so why should the immigrants get special treatment. Perhaps less immigrants is the answer.

    By D. Ferguson on Sep 24, 2009

  12. Yes, my family have been in Can. since 1770 and 1850; there was no social network in those times. I’ve worked and contributed to Canada since my early teens. As a senior female over 65 yrs. of age my income of $13,500. is well below the poverty line. I’m deeply resentful of the very idea of someone from another country receiving OAS after 3 years and at any time without contributing to this county,

I am very supportive of genuine immigrants and refugees and have contributed to their well-being by volunteering in different capacities for many years.

    Sincerely,

  13. I CAME TO THIS WONDERFUL CANADA WHEN I WAS 24 AND NOW 72.I HAD TO BE SPONSERED, THAT THERE WAS MONEY TO SUPPORT ME WHILE HERE.
I BACAME A CANADIAN LANDED IMMIGRANT,AND MADE TO WORK BY MY LAWYER TO SHOW CANADA THAT I WAS GOING TO BE A GOOD CITIZEN. HAVE WORKED EVER SINCE.
IF PEOPLE WANT TO BRING THEIR ELDERLY FAMILIES THEN THEY SHOULD SUPPORT THEM FOR THE 10 YEARS REQUIERED NOT 3 YEARS.RUBY SHOULD STEP DOWN WITH ALL HER STUPID IDEAS.IF CANADA DOES NOT WAKE WE ARE GOING TO BE EVERTAKEN BY IDIOTS.
THE IMMIGRATION SHOULD HAVE CLOSED QUOATA A LONG TIME AGO.
I KNOW IMMIGRANTS WHO HAVE BROUGHT THEIR PARENTS HERE, THEY CAN;T EVEN SPEAK OUR LANGUAGE
THAT IS SICK.MAY GOD BLESS CANADA AND SHOW US THE RIGHT WAY TO GO.
