Hello
Been away for a few days….tourist in my own city kind-of-thing. Victoria is an amazing city – the whole Canada Day weekend was a blast. Did manage to get back to the tall ships before they sailed off. Despite the line ups I even managed to hop aboard and get a good view of what life on the high seas is like in a wooden boat. The harbour was bubbling with excitement – the ships were real beauties. Big flags, tall wooden masts, lots of people, bands and even a pirate or two roamed around.

Loved the US coast guard – sheer size of it was incredible. At times it takes up to 6 sailors to turn the wheels – yes, that’s right – there are 3 wheels:

This is the Pacific Swift. It was built in Victoria and is part of the S.A.L.T.S program (Sail & Life Training Society – they provide leadership training programs for young adults). Its a traditioinal wooden ship – a gaff top sail schooner to be exact- and has the world’s tiniest kitchen I do believe. How the 20 odd people or so eat, sleep and live on that thing I’ll never know. But they do.

Also mangaed to get back to red fish blue fish – and had some pretty good fish ‘n chips. My favourite so far. Light batter – big moist ‘n flaky fish (i chose halibut) and those delicious melt-in-your mouth fries. Plus – I really love the coleslaw. The texture, the hint of sesame – I think I’ll have to add it to my “crave” list.

My tourist travels also took me up to the Governer General’s house to look at those amazing gardens and down to the waterfront for Canada Day fireworks.
Today I finished off my mini-break with a strawberry adventure up in Saanich…..picked my own with the help of Heather and her two kids. And tomorrow is jam making day. Will check in with those stories and hopefully a fantastic recipe! Heather is a very acccomplished chef – worked at Chez Panis – so am eager to share a kitchen with her!
Have a great day.
Cheers
